Gaming is a far cry from the stereotypical hobby of "nerds" it once was. Colleen Lachowicz, a Democrat for the state of Maine, USA, won her election to become a US State Senator on 7 November 2012. The 48-year-old social worker beat Republican Thomas Martin with 8,666 votes to 7,753 amid a Republican Party campaign that tried to use her World of Warcraft habit against her. “Maine needs a State Senator that lives in the real world, not in Colleen’s fantasy world,” one of the slogans said.
At the time of winning the election, Lachowicz had a level 85 Orc Rogue named Santiaga.
