On 29 March 2007, the first trailer for videogame Grand Theft Auto IV was uploaded to Rockstar Games' website. It had so many people attempting to watch it that the website crashed. Image-sharing website 4chan.org used the no-longer-functioning link to redirect viewers to the Rick Astley video of "Never Gonna Give You Up". "Rickrolling" is a successor of "duckrolling" where Internet links were redirected to an image of a duck on wheels. In March 2007, the first known instance of "rickrolling" occurred.

On 22 April 2008 FoxNews reported that on April Fools' Day (1 April 2008) countless websites "Rickrolled" their viewers, including any viewer who clicked on one of YouTube's "featured videos".
