The first electric motor was constructed by English inventor Michael Faraday in 1821. The device, which Faraday noted used "electromagnetic rotation", was a simple homopolar motor that produced continuous rotation of a wire suspended in mercury around a magnet. When a current was passed through the wire, the electric field caused the rotation effect.
