According to the Economist Intelligence Unit in 2018, the Syrian capital of Damascus is considered the world's least expensive city. It was given a WCOL index rating of 26 (where New York City, USA, equals 100) to finish 133rd of 133 cities.
Damascus fell 14 places down the index in a year, due to the ongoing impact of war. The average price of a 1-kg loaf of bread is US$0.60, while a litre of unleaded petrol costs an average of US$0.50.
