The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) was the first theatrically released film to be shot and projected at a frame rate of 48 frames per second, cramming twice as much visual information into each second of the movie as a regular 24 fps film. A frame rate of 24 fps has been the industry standard in motion pictures ever since the introduction of synchronised sound in 1927.
