On 31 May 1984, six death row inmates of the Mecklenburg Correctional Centre in Virginia, USA, escaped from the prison. Making use of slack prison procedures and pretending that they were removing a bomb, they used guile and boldness to overpower a correctional officer and fool others. All were caught within few days and all were subsequently executed over the next 12 years, Linwood Briley being the first on 12 October 1984 and Lem Tuggle the last on 12 December 1996.
