The first man to jump from an aeroplane was Captain Albert Berry of the US Army. On 1 March 1912, he jumped from a Benoist biplane over Jefferson Barracks, St Louis, Missouri, USA, from a height of 460 metres (1,500 ft). Asked if he would repeat the experience, he is reported to have replied: “Never again!” Some sources claim that Grant Thornton achieved the feat first, in 1911, but firmer proof is available, and generally supported for the claim of Captain Albert Berry.
