On 28 March 1910, the Frenchman and inventor, Henri Fabre, achieved the first take-off from water in an aircraft. The machine was a hydroplane nicknamed “Le Canard – the Duck” and the flight took place over Lake Berre, Martigues, France. It was powered by a 50-horsepower rotary engine and flew for a distance of 1,650 feet at a height of around six feet.
