The first aircraft to fly on solar power was the AstroFlight Sunrise. The unmanned experimental electric aircraft first flew on 4 November 1974 from Bicycle Lake on the Fort Irwin Military Reservation, California, USA and it made a total of 28 flights before it broke up owing to turbulence near cumulus cloud.
It was a technology demonstrator and the early flights were achieved on battery power but later it would climb until the solar cells cooled and their efficiency increased. According to its Amercan designer, Roland Boucher, it proved the feasibility of solar powered flight to extreme altitudes.
