The first manned airplane flight combining solar and battery power was achieved on 29 April 1979, when the Mauro Solar Riser flew for about half a mile and reached a maximum height of 40 feet at Flabob Airport in Riverside, California USA. The aircraft was designed and built by the American Larry Mauro.
Photovoltaic cells on the wings converted the sun’s rays into electricity, which was then stored in a battery, which in turn powered the electric motor on the aircraft. The aircraft is now in the EAA AirVenture Museum, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA.
