On 5 March 2013, the helicopter constructor AgustaWestland, part of the Italian Finmeccanica group, officially unveiled the world’s first electric tilt rotor aircraft under the name Project Zero. It is a technology demonstrator and, although the company says it has made a number of flights, the first at the company’s facility at Cascina Costa, Italy, in June 2011, few technological details have been made public. It is, however, completely electric-powered, and can transition from hovering flight to forward flight by means of two integrated rotors that tilt through 90 degrees. The rotors are situated within the wingspan of the aircraft rather than at the end of the wing, as is the case with other conventionally powered, tilt rotor aircraft such as the V-22 Osprey and the Bell Augusta 609.
