The first person to photograph all 39 bird of paradise species is rainforest biologist-photographer Dr Tim Laman (Japan), who has produced the lavishly illustrated book, Birds of Paradise: Revealing the World's Most Extraordinary Birds (published by National Geographic Society, 23 Oct 2012) containing many of his spectacular images.
With help from ornithologist Edwin Scholes the book contains images of astonishing beauty, solid yet approachable natural history, and a National Geographic message of conservation.
Currently, 39 species of bird of paradise are generally recognised (a few additional ones are recognised by certain authorities). These are native to New Guinea and several smaller outlying islands, as well as the Moluccas and Australia, and Laman's quest has taken him eight years to achieve.
