The "Sacco", created in 1969 by Italian designers Piero Gatti, Cesare Paolini, and Franco Teodoro, was the first bean bag chair. Unlike a conventional chair, the "Sacco" had no frame and was instead a pear-shaped soft skin filled with pellets, which shaped itself around the user when sat on. Manufactured by Zanotta Design of Italy, the chair was available in leather or vinyl. The original pear shape, which was intended to provide a degree of support for the head, was eventually dropped in favour of a simpler spherical design. The original thermocel pellet filling was also replaced, with Styrofoam pellets, shredded polyurethane foam, urethane foam, polystyrene beads, or PVC pellets.
