On 27 September 2006 a team of five doctors, led by Dominique Martin (France) successfully removed a benign tumour from the arm of volunteer Philippe Sanchot (France) in an operation that lasted around 10 minutes. The procedure was carried out on board a modified Airbus A300, which flew in parabolas in order to mimic the microgravity environment of space. The operation was performed as part of trials to test the feasibility of performing surgery on astronauts on long-distance space flights.
