Richard Lee Norris (USA) underwent 36 hours of surgery, completed on 20 March 2012 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. The operation gave him a complete new face, from his scalp to the base of his neck, including both sets of jaws, teeth and a portion of his tongue. Norris had been disfigured in a gun accident in 1997 in which he lost his lips, nose, and much of his lower and upper jaws. On 16 October 2012 the University of Maryland reported that Norris had around 80% normal motor function on the right side of his face, and around 40% on the left. He was able to smile, eat, smell and taste.
The organs of the donor also saved the lives of five other people.
