The women’s World Cup has been staged 10 times since 1973 and Australia have won a record six tournaments. The “Southern Stars” claimed back-to-back titles in 1978, 1982 and 1988, and were also crowned champions in 1997, 2005 and 2013. In the 2013 final, on 17 February, Australia defeated the West Indies by 114 runs in Mumbai, India, to add the World Cup to the World T20 title they won in October 2012. England won the women’s World Cup in 1973, 1993 and 2009 and New Zealand (the only team other than Australia and England to claim the title) triumphed in 2000. Australia won six of their seven matches at the 2013 World Cup, with their only defeat coming at the hands of the West Indies (a result that eliminated defending champions England) at the Super Six stage. By winning the World Cup, Australia matched England’s 2009 achievement of simultaneously holding the World T20, World Cup and Ashes (the latter contested by Australia and England).
