In 1987, Brij Bihari Pandey, a Hindu priest, at the age of 84 together with 15 accomplices killed four people. His trial lasted more than 20 years and he was handed down a life sentence in 2009. Owing to difficulties with his ill health, he was, however, released on humanitarian grounds from the Gorakhpur jail in Uttar Pradesh, India, at the age of 108, in June 2011. At the time he was the world’s oldest known inmate of a prison. He died two months after his release on 25 August 2011.
