Following the introduction of the Best Short Subject (Cartoons) category at the 1932 Academy Awards, Walt Disney Productions proceeded to win the award for eight consecutive years – the longest unbroken run of success in Oscar history. Disney failed to scoop the award for the first time in 1940, when MGM’s ‘The Milky Way’ took the prize. As the company began to concentrate their efforts on more ambitious feature length productions during the following decade, they won only two Short Subject Oscars during the 1940s, and none in the 1950s.
