Telstar 1 was built by Bell Telephone Laboratories (USA) and was launched on 10 July 1962. It was a roughly spherical satellite 87.6 cm across and was equipped with solar cells and batteries to actively relay intercontinental communications on Earth. Over the following six months Telstar 1 successfully performed around 400 transmission sessions that included multi-channel television, telephone, facsimile and telegraph signals. Telstar 1 ceased operations on 21 February 1963.
