The most expensive LEGO® brick was sold on 3 December 2012 to an anonymous buyer for $12,500 (£7,752.42) by Brick Envy, Inc. (USA), a specialist LEGO® collector website founded by John Hughbanks and Mark Gallo (both USA). The 25.6-g (0.9-oz) 2 x 4 brick was crafted from 14-carat gold was originally created as a gift to long-serving members of the LEGO group between the years of 1979 and 1981.
The brick had a list price of $14,449.99 but sold for just less than this. The catalogue entry reads: "This incedibly rare piece was given to LEGO employees that had 25 years of employment at the Hohenwestedt, Germany factory and was also given to couple of very special business partners of LEGO® of the time. It was only given out from about 1979-1981, only one or 2 per year from my understanding."
