There were 15 presidents of the USA before Abraham Lincoln, who served from 1861 until 1865. Lincoln was famous for his active support for freeing African Americans and, on 1 January 1863, during the American Civil War between the northern and southern (Confederate) states he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared for ever free those slaves within the Confederacy. However, an actor named John Wilkes Booth, a supporter of the Confederate cause, assassinated Lincoln on 14 April 1865 - Good Friday or Crucifixion Day - at Ford’s Theatre, Washington. He was the first US president to be so killed.
