James Hamilton, of Bothwellhaugh, Scotland, a follower and supporter of Mary Queen of Scots, used a carbine to fire on James Stewart, the 1st Earl of Moray and Regent of Scotland for his nephew, the child King James VI of Scotland. Hamilton fired at the earl from a house in the main street of the town on 23 January 1570.
