Some female sharks of various species have reproduced parthenogenetically, i.e., via virgin birth (asexual reproduction) without the participation of a male shark. The most fecund virgin shark on record is Zebedee, a female zebra shark Stegosoma fasciatum on display in a restaurant aquarium within the luxury Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, UAE. Beginning in 2007, she has produced a series of viable egg-encased shark pups for four successive years, even though she has not been in the company of any male sharks during any of those years, meaning that her eggs are unfertilized.
