The largest feathered animal currently known to science is a dinosaur – Yutyrannus huali. Officially described in April 2012 after having been discovered in northeastern China's Yixian Formation fossil deposit (dating from the Lower Cretaceous Period, approximately 125 million years ago), this tyrannosaur was entirely covered in long filamentous downy feathers, measured 9.1 m long, weighed 1400 kg, and was an ancestor of the famous Tyrannosaurus rex.
