The first Oscar for Special Effects was awarded to The Rains Came (USA, 1939), which featured an epic flood. This was overseen by 20th Century Fox's Fred Sersen (Czechslovakia). A variety of techniques, including the split-screen combination of live action and miniatures was used to depict flood and earthquake devastation.
A lake created in a Fox lot for the movie was later named after Sersen.
