The first use of a glass matte painting in a movie was in California Missions (USA, 1907) by Norman Dawn (USA). The basic technique was used to augment scenery. A sheet of glass was placed in front of the camera and an artist would paint extra details into the shot. The technique of painting had long been used in photography but Norman Dawn was one of the very first to use it in films and it survived as a staple of special effects for years.
