The most powerful telescopic crane is the Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1 – able to lift weights of 1,200 metric tons using its giant 100-metre-long boom. The boom consists of eight nested sections of steel tube that extend like a mariner’s telescope – this is why the machine is called a "telescopic crane". The boom itself is mounted on a nine-axle truck base for mobility. The crane is powered by two engines, one for the boom and one for the truck. The vehicle uses four legs that extend from the truck base, for extra stability, as well as a system of counterweights to prevent the crane from tipping over when lifting.
