A demolition shear is essentially a giant pair of powerful scissors mounted on a long, robot-like arm – used for dismantling large metal structures. The biggest one ever is the Rusch Triple 34-25 excavator with a Genesis 2500 Demolition Shear fitted to its excavator arm. This monster, which has an enormous reach of 34 metres, was put together by Norwegian demolition contractor AF Decom in 2009 to munch its way through sections of disused North Sea oil platforms. The machine’s arm is jointed into three sections for extra manoeuvrability and is built from super-strong Weldex steel.
