Titania, the largest of Uranus’ 27 moons, has a diameter of 1,578 km and orbits the planet at a mean distance of 435,000 km. It was discovered in 1787 by the German-born British astronomer William Herschel. Images returned by Voyager 2, which encountered the Uranus system in 1986, revealed a surface characterized by impact craters and tectonic features, including Messina Chasmata, a trench-like feature over 1,490 km long. Titania is probably composed of roughly equal proportions of mainly ice and rock. Titania is the eighth most massive moon in the Solar System.
