Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, was discovered in 1655 by the Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens. It has a diameter of 5,150 km, making it larger in size than the planet Mercury. It is the only moon in the Solar System with a thick atmosphere and the only moon in the outer Solar System to be landed upon by a space probe. Observations of Titan by the Cassini spacecraft have revealed lakes and rivers of liquid hydrocarbons on its surface. Titan is the second largest moon in the Solar System.
