In 1964, German gymnast Erika Zuchold (b. 19 March 1947) became the first woman to perform a back flip on a beam, when she achieved the feat at the 1964 GDR Championships. Erika began gymnastics in 1959 in Leipzig. She was aged 17 when she performed the feat.

A back flip is sometimes known as a flip-flop.
