The Nord Stream pipeline is a pair of parallel natural gas pipelines running for 1,222 km under the Baltic Sea. On 8 October 2012 both pipes became operation for the first time, connecting Vyborg, Russia, to Greifswald, Germany. The pipeline can transport 55 billion cubic metres of natural gas from Russia to Europe per year – enough to supply more than 26 million European households.
