The first x-ray was taken by the inventor of the process, Wilhelm Röntgen (Germany), on 22 December 1895 at the University of Würzburg, Germany. The image was of the left hand of his wife Anna and includes her wedding ring.

Roentgen had discovered what he named x-rays just over a month earlier, on 8 November 1895, as an offshoot of electrical experiments he had been conducting. He was given the first ever Nobel prize for physics as a result of his work in 1901.
