SOPA and PIPA (Stop Online Piracy Act and PROTECT IP Act) were two laws proposed in the US Congress that led to widespread protest on the World Wide Web. On 18 January 2012 more than 115,000 websites took part by blacking out content or denying access to users altogether. The entire English-language version of Wikipedia was blacked out and over 162 million visitors to their site were instead greeted by a blocking page which encouraged US users to contact their Congressional representative. During the 24-hour period Google censored its own homepage logo as part of the protest. Almost a billion people were blocked from visiting websites for this period.
