At an altitude of 3,700 m (12,139 ft) above sea level, the Potala Palace, Lhasa, Tibet, is the world's highest palace. It is situated on the side of the Red Mountain in the Lhasa Valley. Construction began in 1645 under the direction of the Great Fifth Dalai Lama, and the final palace measures 400 x 350 m (1,312 x 1,148 ft). Today, the Potala Palace is used partly as a museum. Visitors are advised to tackle the steep approach slowly in order to avoid altitude sickness.
