The largest palace being used principally as a museum and art gallery is the Louvre Palace in Paris, France. Largely constructed and modified by various kings of France between 1364–1756, later developments and additions have given the palace a total size of 210,000 m² (2,260,421 ft²). The famous glass pyramid designed by architect I. M. Pei was added to the Louvre courtyard in 1989.
The Louvre Palace collections were first opened to the public for three days a week on 10 August 1793, and presently contain over 35,000 art works and objects. The Louvre receives over 8 million visitors every year.
