The first fully operational spiral or curved escalator was installed at a trade fair site in Osaka, Japan, in 1985. Installed by the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, the device was much more complex and expensive than a conventional straight escalator, due to multiple centre points, additional guide rollers and other design and engineering challenges. A working experimental spiral escalator with a 23-ft diameter shaft and 35-ft vertical rise was installed at the Holloway Road Station of the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brampton Railway in London, UK, in 1906. However, after a day's test and for safety reasons it was never opened for public use.
