The world's first scenic (glass wall-climber) elevator attached to the outside of a building was installed in 1956 at El Cortez Hotel, San Diego, USA, by its then owner Harry Handlery. Designed by Polish-American architect C.J. "Pat" Paderewski, and manufactured by the Elevator Electric Inc., the 15-floor ram-operated elevator was known as the "Starlight Express". It was removed when the hotel was refurbished in 2000.
Two major elevator companies, Otis and Westinghouse, refused to build the controversial design before the local San Diego firm, Elevator Electric Inc., agreed to the installation.
