On 15 June 2004 Russian antivirus company Kaspersky Labs announced its discovery of the Cabir worm. Cabir targets cell phones running the Symbian operating system and spreads to other phones using Bluetooth. Once infected, Cabir runs every time the phone is started and uses Bluetooth to search for nearby Symbian phones, to which it sends a copy of itself as a message in which it disguises itself as a security manager utility. If the user chooses to install this, their phone becomes infected.
