In around 924 CE the Icelandic volcanic fissure system known as Eldgjá began an eruption that lasted around 4–7 years. The eruption occurred from several vents along a 75-km-long discontinuous system of fissures and produced a total of about 19.6 cubic kilometres of lava. The only other flood basalt eruption to have occurred in historic times was the smaller eruption of Laki, also in Iceland, from 1783–1784.
