Derechos are a type of long-lasting straight line windstorm associated with a band of fast-moving showers and thunderstorms. In the early morning of 31 May 1998 a derecho raced across the US states of Wisconsin and lower Michigan. In eastern Wisconsin a wind gust of 206 kph (128 mph) was measured and gusts in lower Michigan were estimated to have reached 209 kph (130 mph).
