Barn owls, or tytonids, constitute an entirely separate taxonomic family (Tytonidae) from all other owls (Strigidae). The world's largest tytonid is the Australian masked owl Tyto novaehollandiae, occurring in Australia's non-desert regions and also in southern New Guinea. Females are much larger than males, sporting a wingspan up to 1.28 m, weighing 0.55–1.26 kg, and attaining a total length of 0.4–0.5 m.
