The Old World vulture with the greatest wingspan is the bearded vulture or lammergeier Gypaetus barbatus. A somewhat atypical species, with a wedge-shaped tail and feathered head, and native to southern Europe, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and Tibet, it boasts a wingspan of 2.31–2.83 m. This span just exceeds that of the comparably impressive griffon vulture Gyps fulvus of southern Europe, northern Africa, and Asia, whose wingspan is 2.30–2.80 m.
