The heaviest species of fish eagle (genus Haliaeetus) is Steller's sea eagle Haliaeetus pelagicus, native to coastal northeastern Asia, in particular far-eastern Russia. Adult females can weigh up to 9.5 kg, and adult males up to 6.8 kg. Moreover, in terms of average weight, this species tends to outweigh even the harpy eagle Harpia harpyja and the Philippine eagle Pithecophaga jefferyi, by around 1 kg.
As one would expect from such a mighty eagle, its feet and talons are extremely powerful too. Indeed, in one (in)famous case, this was dramatically confirmed when a wildlife veterinary surgeon was severely wounded after an adult female Steller's sea eagle grasped one of his arms with her talons and exerted such force that her talons pierced directly through his arm, their tips emerging through the far side of his arm!
