Housing the largest Marx generator (a high-voltage generator named after German engineer, Erwin Otto Marx), the Siberian Power Research Institute (SIBNIIE), Novosibirsk, Russian Federation, has been a centre for extreme electrical research since 1967. The multi-million-volt impulse Marx generator uses 896 storage capacitors to impart 1.225 million joules of energy per discharge of the generator. This results in spectacular arcs of electrical lightning jumping a 70-m (230-ft) gap with an arc path length estimated at 150 m (492 ft).
This facility has advanced understanding in the limits of power-line transmission without arcing, constraining maximum transmission line voltages to approximately 1.2 Million Volts.
