The longest HVDC power line transporting power is the Rio Madeira link in Brazil. The High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Itaipu system uses two +/- 600kV bipoles, each with a rated power capacity of 3,150 MWatts, and runs for over 2,500 km (1,550 miles) between Porto Velho and São Paulo.
Taking hydroelectric power from the Itaipu Dam to the large population of São Paulo is a tremendous achievement that crosses large portions of Amazonian rainforest.
