Scientists at the University of Toronto, Canada, have made the "shocking" discovery of the highest known electrical current in the universe. Generated by a cosmic jet more than 2 billion light years (1.176E22 miles) away in a galaxy known as 3C303, the electrical current is measured at 1E18 amps (1 followed by eighteen zeros). The scientists used the effect of the current on radio waves coming from the galaxy to measure this tremendous amount of electrical energy, which is most likely generated by magnetic fields from a black hole at the centre of the galaxy. The resulting jet of matter extends into space to around 150,000 light years (8.82E17 miles); possibly the largest bolt of lightning ever seen.
