The first ascent of the 4,884-m-high (16,024-ft) Puncak Jaya, aka the Carstensz Pyramid, on the island of New Guinea in Indonesia was by a four-man team consisting of expedition leader Heinrich Harrer (Austria, 1912–2006), Philip Temple, Russell Kippax (both New Zealand) and Albertus Huizenga (Netherlands), who reached the summit on 13 February 1962. Puncak Jaya, the "Summit of Victory", is the highest point in Oceania and therefore one of the "Seven Summits" – the highest points on each of the seven continents. Puncak Jaya is located at 4.08°S, 137.18°E in the Carstensz Range in the western half of New Guinea. A tropical mountain, it is widely considered the most difficult of the Seven Summits owing to its technical, if not physical, demands.
