The most venomous species of rattlesnake – and also the most venomous species of snake of any kind native to the Americas – is the tiger rattlesnake Crotalus tigris. Named after its body's dorsal crossbands, and native to southwestern USA and northwestern Mexico, this fairly diminutive rattlesnake (less than 100 cm long) also has a relatively small venom yield, averaging 11 mg, but its LD value is only 0.6 mg/kg.
