Venomous snakes usually have forward-pointing venom fangs positioned at or near the front of their maxillae (upper jaws). However, some venomous species belonging to the family Colubridae have backward-pointing venom fangs positioned at the back of their maxillae. These are known as rear-fanged snakes, and the world's most venomous species is the boomslang Dispholidus typus. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, if its venom enters a vein when it bites a victim it is so toxic that its LD (the amount of venom sufficient to kill mice in 50% of cases) is only 0.06–0.72 mg/kg.
